The Times rated ten of the biggest and most important construction projects currently under construction. China's top three buildings are the Bird's Nest, the main stadium of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport and the new site of China Central Television.
After winning the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games, there has been a building fever in Britain, but this is only the tip of the world's architectural iceberg. From the United States to Kazakhstan, there has been a building fever in many parts of the world that was rarely seen in the past. Dubai, Beijing, Shanghai and Moscow have all worked hard to gain a place on the world architecture stage. The Times rated ten of the biggest and most important construction projects currently under construction. These construction projects are impressive. Most of them are huge and a few are controversial. But some of them are really architectural miracles, and these buildings will change the history of architecture and even the world.
National Stadium, the Main Stadium of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
Designer: Herzog and Demeron Design Firms
It is 330 metres long, 220 metres wide, 69.2 metres high, and has a construction area of 250,000 square metres, accommodating 100,000 spectators. Whether the stadium, known as the miracle of the new building, has as many toilets as Wembley has aroused concern.
Comments: It has the characteristics of the Lia Valley.
Architectural Value: Testing a large number of the latest technology, all efforts are to achieve the "skin" and "construction" into a new architectural dream.
Great Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt
Designer: Heneghan Peng Architecture, Ireland
The problem facing the world's largest Archaeological Museum is how to make the most sensitive construction next to the ancient pyramids. This magnificent museum is composed of a series of grand lobbies on the ground. The overall layout is like a torn cat's paw. The roof is triangular.
Comments: Pure naivety, transparent striped marble is the most noticeable. It is integrated with the surrounding pyramids.
Architectural value: involves all aspects of real architecture.
Dubai Building, United Arab Emirates
Designer: American SOM Design Institute (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill)
It is more than 700 meters (or 800 meters) high, 160 stories (or perhaps 200 stories), and so far 484.1 meters high. According to data from its official website, the amount of concrete used in building construction is as heavy as 100,000 elephants.
Comments: The United Arab Emirates has the fastest elevator in the world - 64 kilometers per hour and the highest man-made building in the world.
Architectural Value: The United Arab Emirates is bound to have the "ugliest" skyscrapers on Earth.
The National Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome "Maxxi"
Designer: Zaha Hadid
The project, which costs 60 million euros, is called "maxxi" (the first two letters stand for mu-seumofart, the Museum of Art, and XXI is the Roman number "xxi" for the 21st century). It is a modern building built of steel and glass, and will collect more and more contemporary works of art in Italy. As can be seen from the model, it is like a labyrinth of twists and turns.
Comments: It is reminiscent of spaghetti.
Architectural Value: Designers promise "multivalent density" and "wall release". In other words, walls that become ceilings become floors (too difficult to understand).
